João Barroso, coordinator of the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Program, is the only Portuguese present at the initiative.
The Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Program (WASP), a pioneer initiative in Portugal and which, in 2020, launched the only national seal of sustainable wine production, has become an international reference.
Good practices and the sustainable vision as a whole explain that the program coordinator, João Barroso, was the only Portuguese invited to participate in the conference “Sustainability in the Vineyard”, an event that brings together great international names in the world of wine and which intends to debate the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the sector.
The free participation event, which will take place online on June 22, at 9:00 am, is held by Sustainable Wine, a London organization that aims to establish sustainability as a trend of the future in the wine sector worldwide. “Wines of Alentejo have been standing out in international markets and sustainability is certainly the future of the wine sector.
This type of event is essential to share knowledge and useful tools to achieve a common goal: the sustainability of production, the urgent adaptation of an entire industry and the enhancement of the resilience of agricultural systems to the real threat of climate change.” said João Barroso, coordinator of PSVA.
The objective of improving the practices used in vineyards and wineries, producing quality and economically viable grapes and wine, has been a common purpose for various entities and wine producers worldwide, so that, among the different topics addressed at the conference, are the reuse of water in the wine sector and sustainability certification.
