Alentejo Oenophile Confraternity - 30 years defending the region's wine
Next Saturday, November 20th, the Confraria dos Enófilos do Alentejo (CEA) is to be congratulated as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Born in 1991, its objective has always been to invest in the dissemination of Alentejo vines and wine, essentially covering its historical and cultural aspects, but also its economic-social and other aspects.

The Confraria regularly develops various activities, including its wine competition, an outstanding event in the national wine calendar. In 2020, its eighth edition was held, since in 2021 and due to the pandemic, the Best Wines of the Alentejo Contest did not take place.

Cândida Vacas de Carvalho, Judge of the Board (the equivalent of President of the Board), says that “the Confraria has the honor of defending the Alentejo, the purity and extraordinary quality of its wines. At the same time, the competition that we are organizing aims to reward not only the quality of the wine produced in Alentejo, but also to introduce consumers to a new generation of winemakers and producers.”

The 30th anniversary celebrations begin with a lecture at Palácio D. Manuel, in Évora, in which the historian José António Falcão will address the theme “From Vide to Wine – Images, Myths and Symbols.”. This is followed by a visit to Monte da Comenda Agro Turismo Ldª., in Arraiolos, which includes a lunch at the property.

The celebrations continue with the holding of the II Grand Chapter of the Confraternity, with the election of new leaders, followed by a mass in the Church of the Hotel Convento do Espinheiro, after which the Enthronement of new confreres takes place and, finally, the closing dinner which will take place at the Hotel Convento do Espinheiro.
The symbols of this Confraternity are the traditional Alentejano Capote, with the abeiro hat, as well as the insignia, emblem and standard.

Notes - The Confraria dos Enófilos do Alentejo was formally constituted, by public deed drawn up at Palácio D. Manuel in Évora, on June 29, 1991, having sponsored the act by Eng.º João Carvalho Ghira, as Grand Master of the Collegiate of Enófilos of St. Vincent. Many of the future Founding Confreres of the Confraternity took part in this public act, and the deed of incorporation was signed by 23 of them, by Dr. Manuel Carvalho Moniz and by Luísa Charrua, currently Confrade Sister.
