Alentejo reaches record exports in Talha Wine
Until October, there was a 15% increase in exported Talha – DOC Alentejo wine compared to 2021
Japan, Brazil and the USA were the main export destinations.
The year 2022 is not over yet, but the Alentejo Regional Winegrowing Commission (CVRA) found that, until October, Talha Wine - DOC Alentejo had already been exported in a quantity greater than that of the whole year of 2021, surpassing, even, the largest volume registered since 2015.
Japan, Brazil and the USA were the main destinations responsible for this record, accounting for, until October, a total of 9 thousand liters of wine exported, which corresponds to 12,216 bottles of 75 cl, and results in an increase of 15% compared to the entire year 2021, considering that, in the previous year, exports registered an increase of 47%.
Francisco Mateus, president of the CVRA, considers that “the number reached until October, based on the export certificates issued by the CVRA, is a good sign of the vitality of Talha Wine and the vibrant way in which producers are producing and promoting this internationally. ancestral method of production.”
The official also reinforces, despite being a niche product, which in 2021 represented 0.1% of the Alentejo’s total production, “exports already reach 14 international markets, mainly in North America, South America and Asia, being a wine that shows the harmonious way in which modernity and tradition coexist in the region.”
It should be remembered that the total amount of Talha Wine – DOC Alentejo that is bottled and reaches the market never exceeded 80 thousand liters per year, making these values very significant for the region.
The Wines of Talha – DOC Alentejo are the result of a unique production process in clay deposits, the so-called “stalhas”, which has remained active in the Alentejo since the time of the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula.
In 2010, this production process was recognized within the DOC Alentejo and, since then, the number of producers has continued to increase: in 2021, 23 produced 181,440 liters, of which 73,644 advanced in the certification process. The remaining volume is often used in tourist activities, not reaching the bottling, labeling and entry into the usual commercial circuits.
This is also one of the particularities of the wine produced in pots, which gather consumption at the place of production, surrounded by friends, guests and tourists who, these days will have the opportunity to head to the Alentejo and try this unique product with the opening das Talhas from the 11th of November.
