VIII Best Wines of Alentejo Competition highlights quality of the wines presented

The VIII Best Alentejo Wines Competition took place at the new premises of the Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo, where 132 wines from the region were present, of which 39 white wines, 8 rosé wines and 85 red wines.

Due to the Contest regulation, only 20% of the total wines can be awarded, so the best 27 wines were presented. The highlight goes to the Gold Medal in White Wines awarded to Monte da Capela - Reserva 2018, produced by Casa Clara, while the Gold Medal in Red Wines was awarded to Graniper's Poliphonia Signature 2015, while the Gold Medal in the Wines category Rosé distinguished Comenda Grande 2019, produced by Monte da Comenda Agroturismo. In addition to the gold, silver and bronze medals, the Honorable Mentions for 5 white and 14 red wines are also highlighted.

“The contest wines from different producers in the Alentejo, all classified with a Geographical Indication and / or Denomination of Origin, made possible a high quality tasting, very interesting and diverse in organoleptic profile. In addition to all this, the fact that the contest took place this year in the new premises of the Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo, complying with all safety standards, turned out to be even more special. Alentejo Wines have once again shown their quality as a product and the quality of everyone involved in their production, which is why they deserve total trust from consumers and companies that producers deal with daily, ”says Escanção Mor da Confraria - Óscar Gato.

The jury was composed of 15 elements, winemakers António Ventura, Bernardo Cabral, Carlos Ramos, Francisco Pimenta, Joana Roque Vale, Luís Duarte, Nelson Rolo, Paulo Laureano, Pedro Baptista, Rui Veladas and Rui Reguinga, also José Santanita as representative of Portuguese Sommelier Association, journalist João Paulo Martins, Maria João Cabrita representing the University of Évora and Confrade Enófilo, Francisco Mata.

In a time of pandemic, the contest complied with all the safety rules for detachment and individual protection of all staff involved in the event.
