Wines of Alentejo exports maintain growth trend and rise 12% in value and 10% by volume
Brazil, USA, Canada, Poland and Switzerland were the destinations that most contributed to the results recorded.
In the first half of this year, exports of Alentejo Wines recorded an increase of 12.4% in value and 9.7% in volume, which corresponds to 37.1 million euros and 10.4 million liters of wine. sold abroad, compared to the same period in 2021. According to data released by the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA), Brazil, USA, Canada, Poland and Switzerland were the destinations that most contributed to the positive results achieved.
Between January and June, the average price per liter of wine also rose by 2.5%, to €3.57, with Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) wine registering a more accentuated growth, of 6.1% - to €5.35 - and Regional growing 4%, to €3.05, an important index that “shows, once again, that the quality of Alentejo wines is being valued abroad, with consumers willing to pay a higher price for our wines”, explains Francisco Mateus, president of CVRA.
In order to leverage the good results obtained, the Brazilian markets (to reach +23% in value and +26% in volume), the North American (with +21% in value and +14% in volume), the Canadian (+17% in value and +9% in volume) and Polish (+3% in value and +1% in volume). The Swiss market, the second market that imports the most Alentejo wine in terms of value, also grew by 9% in this variable, although the volume fell by 3%.
“We once again registered very positive growth that illustrates the effort and work that Alentejo producers have put into promoting our wines across borders, along with investing in their quality and sustainability of production, however, in the months of April to In June we started to see a slowdown in this growth which, despite everything, remained above the numbers recorded last year in all variables of volume of wine sold, price per liter and value”, says Francisco Mateus.
Australia, which, in 2021, established itself in the TOP 20 of the Alentejo wine export markets, continued to strengthen its position with growth of 38% in value and 57% in volume. On the other hand, the Asian markets of China and Macau and the European Union markets, such as France and Sweden, registered drops in the purchase of Alentejo wines. It is recalled that, in the same period of 2021, the Alentejo exported 9.5 million liters of wine, corresponding to 33 million euros, at an average price per liter of €3.49.
