Wines of Alentejo present sustainable production program to the American market
The Alentejo Regional Winegrowing Commission (CVRA) presented, exclusively to a group of American journalists, the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Program (PSVA), an unprecedented initiative in the Portuguese wine sector that, in the beginning of August, started certification sustainable production.
The action aimed at enhancing and increasing the Alentejo's notoriety in what is one of the main wine importing countries in the region and has already resulted in more than 2.6 million impressions, in the different news generated on the theme, which corresponds to the number of times the content was shown to viewers on social media. CVRA expects the initiative to translate into an increase in sales to the American market, which is already the 4th largest importer of wine in the region.
João Barroso, coordinator of PSVA, and the renowned Master Sommelier and expert in Alentejo wines, Evan Goldstein, were the two hosts of the presentation that was attended by 45 representatives of the American media.
Five distinct wines were also presented, from five producers in the region, in order to illustrate some of the results of sustainable practices promoted and implemented under the PSVA. “We are counting on the fact that the American market, which comes to know the Alentejo wines better and better, reacts well when realizing that our region intends to be totally eco-friendly in terms of production.
We believe that this new seal that we launched will become a sales driver for this market ”, says Francisco Mateus, chairman of CVRA's management. It is recalled that the first export of Alentejo wine, to the United States of America, was registered in January 1991 and, in 2019, more than 1.2 million liters of Alentejo wine were sold to the American market, which materializes in revenue of more than 4.7 million euros.
