In 1998, Alison Luiz Gomes and her husband Joaquim Luiz Gomes bought Herdade do Rego, a estate which had been in the Luiz Gomes family for many years. They immediately fell in love with the place and began to dream about putting the estate to work. This magical location delivers up exactly what it promises. Surrounded by nature, this is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the changing landscape throughout the year and the stunning views from any spot on the estate.
The estate spreads out over 260 hectares, 27 of which are planted with vines, 140 with olive trees and 30 with cork oak and pine. And then there are the stables for the Lusitanian horses!
Located at 350 metres above sea level, the vines were planted in 2001 and 2002 by the current owners. The vineyard has a north-south aspect and the planting density permits an exposed canopy surface per hectare three times that of the national average. The well drained clay soil sits over a 1 – 2 metres bedrock.
This region has hot summers (+40ºC) and harsh winters (below 0ºC). The average annual precipitation is 450 mm. A cool evening breeze in summer brings the nighttime temperatures down to 20ºC – 25ºC, which is ideal for grapes.
The vineyard has a regulated deficit irrigation system with a reduced evapotranspiration of 30%. This allows obtaining smaller than the average concentrated berries with particularly intense aroma, and ripe and smooth tannins: this is the terroir of the Azamor wines. And this is the authenticity and the modern savoir-faire that make the Azamor wines what they are!
The grapes include both Portuguese (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet) and international varieties (Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot). They are those best suited for the estate and those, as well, that the owners most enjoy. The estate currently produces a range of four wines: Azamor, Azamor Selected Vines, Azamor Petit Verdot and Icon d´Azamor.
