Casa de Sabicos dates back to the second half of the 19th century. It is located in Aldeias de Montoito, a village in the county of Redondo, in the sub-region of Reguengos of the PDO Alentejo.
The matriarch of the family, Sabica (as she was affectionately known to family and friends) took over the running of the estate after the death of her husband. In addition to producing cattle and grain, Sabica encouraged each of her children to grow grapes and make their own wines. Each year, the brothers, sisters and mother would compete amongst each other.
Casa de Sabicos belongs today to Graça Santana Ramalho and Joaquim Madeira, Sabica’s great-grandchildren. With grapes grown in similar soil types and from the same grape varieties, Casa de Sabicos produces today wines with the basic characteristics of those of Grandma Sabica, gently adapted to the modern taste preferences.
