Vineyards on the slopes of the Serra de São Mamede, in Portalegre, in the Upper Alentejo, enjoy the benefit of altitudes of 400-600 metres and subsequently cooler temperatures. Wines from Portalegre are regarded as the finest Alentejo wines and are amongst the best wines in all of Portugal.
Herdade da Tapada do Falcão is a 55-hectare estate located exactly in this area. The property is covered in woods and pastures where cork and holm oak, eucalyptus, olives and maritime pines predominate. Wild flowers and bushes flower in their natural state and the landscape is dotted with outcroppings of granite.
The vineyard comprises 6.2 hectares and was planted in early 2000 with five varieties: Aragonez, Syrah, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet and was granted a PDO status in 2011.
