In the year 2000, Henrique Neves dos Santos, a Lisbon entrepreneur, bought a vineyard and gave birth to the Adega das Mouras.
Around 2004/2005, the estate was extended to take in more than 300 hectares, most of which (more than 226 hectares) is planted with vines. This veritable sea of grapes is one of the greatest expanses of continuous vineyard in Europe. The oldest vines were planted in 2002, the year we began planting the vineyard we have today. Before that, between 2000 and 2002, the existing vines were pulled up – vines for table grapes – and a detailed study of the peculiarities of the terroir was carried out in order to guide the preparation of the soil and the selection of the best-suited grape varieties.
The master Colaço do Rosário, now deceased, was instrumental in these decisions. The beloved Alentejo variety, Trincadeira, comprises 45% of our vineyard but we’ve also planted Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Tinta Caiada, Pinot Noir, Tinta Caiada, Tempranillo and Alicante Bouschet as our red grapes. With regards to our white varieties, we have exclusively chosen four Portuguese grapes: Verdelho, Perrum, Antão Vaz and Arinto.
