(Fernando Pessoa)
That was the principle behind the Barbosa e Silva Soares family’s 1999 decision to buy the Herdade do Carvalhal, a 52-hectare estate located in the heart of the famous Portalegre winegrowing region.
The estate was planted with grape varieties carefully selected to provide the desired characteristics in the future wine. The relatively steep slopes and high altitude, the granitic soils and the north facing aspect all contribute to the expressiveness of this region´s wines.
Herdade do Carvalhal´s vineyard is only planted with red varieties, with the largest percentage being accorded to Trincadeira, a grape that reaches its prime splendour in this region. Aragonez also accounts for a significant percentage of the plantings, whilst a lesser number of Alicante Bouschet grapes are also planted. Vines are carefully monitored and yields are managed so as to obtain high quality grapes.
Fonte Seca is a wine produced exclusively from Herdade do Carvalhal grapes. It results from the most modern winemaking techniques under the careful eye of our winemaker.
