Historical Notes

Sogrape Vinhos has been investing in the classic winegrowing regions of Portugal since it was set up in 1942. With a strong presence in the regions of Dão, Douro and Vinhos Verdes, their entrance into the Alentejo — the winegrowing region with the highest growth rate in the country — was a natural step.

Sogrape Vinhos´ first Alentejo wine was released in 1991, made from selected grapes sourced from growers around the Vidigueira area and crafted at a local winery under the direction of the Sogrape Vinhos winemaking team. Vinha do Monte, now an Alentejo classic, was the brand name chosen and its success led to the purchase of the estate of Herdade do Peso in 1996, also in Vidigueira. Major improvements were made in the vineyards and 1998 witnessed the building of a winery on the property. Now, the winemaking team led by winemaker Miguel Pessanha have all they needed to produce top class wines in the Alentejo.

Herdade do Peso now has a varied portfolio of wines, from the well-known blends to single varietals, from more accessibly priced brands, such as Vinha do Monte, to the more exclusive Herdade do Peso Reserva. In short, Sogrape Vinhos has in the Alentejo wines for every taste and every instance, as has been proven by the number of wine competitions won and by the reviews in specialist publications worldwide.

It takes the warmth, the aromas and scents, and the bright, warm colours of the Alentejo, and turns them into flavours and sensations. Up-to-date and contemporary, Herdade do Peso wines are perfect to accompany food, to bring people together to enjoy congeniality and fine cuisine.

Location and Landscape

Herdade do Peso lies in Pedrogão, in the county of Vidigueira – a place whose name suggests the abundance of vines due to the importance of grape growing in the history of the region. It comprises an area of 465 hectares, 160 of which under vine. Red grape varieties (Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Periquita, Moreto and Touriga Nacional) account for 152 hectares of the plantings. The remaining eight hectares are planted with Antão Vaz and Arinto white grapes.

The estate has a lake covering 20 hectares which provides the much-prized water to irrigate the vineyard and a large olive grove.

From 1992 and until the purchase of Herdade do Peso, Sogrape Vinhos used to buy the grapes from the former owner, a relative of Sogrape Vinhos founder Fernando Guedes.
