Herdade Grande is an agricultural estate with 60 hectares of vineyard and 40 of olive groves whilst the rest of the 350 hectares are devoted to sheep farming. It is located 5 km from Vidigueira in the Alentejo.
The estate, with its vineyards and olive groves, has belonged to the same family since 1920. It was the birthplace of the current owner who, having received an Agricultural Engineering degree in 1970, is currently the manager and winemaker. Together with surrounding lands, the Herdade comprises a tourist hunting preserve that sums 750 hectares.
The wine business began with the planting of vines in 1980. The first wines were made in 1997. The objective is to produce between 350,000 – 400,000 bottles/year, 30% white and 70% red.
A wide range of grape varieties, both native and international, were selected as particularly suited for our terroir and in order to enhance the typical characteristics of Alentejo wines. Quality from the vine to the bottle is our goal.
Reds: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Grossa, Tinta Caiada and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Whites: Antão Vaz, Alvarinho, Arinto, Chardonnay, Perrum, Rabigato, Roupeiro, Rabo de Ovelha, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viosinho and Viognier.
The Herdade Grande winery has everything needed to ensure the production of distinct and elegant wines. Always mixing new winemaking techniques with traditional ones, HG brings forth a final product that is a fair representation of the grape grown in our vineyard. Grapes are hand-picked and taken to the winery where they undergo rigorous selection. They are then fermented in small temperature-controlled vats and small lagares (low stone tanks).
Our wines are matured in oak barrels made from French, American and other origin wood. Ideal temperature and humidity are ensured so that at the perfect time (at least six months later), bottling can take place.
Our wine brands are: Herdade Grande, Condado das Vinhas, Monte das Talhas and Audaz. In 2008 we launched our Herdade Grande Olive oil, made from our own olives that are pressed by external partners.
Herdade Grande takes part in the Alentejo Wine Route. Group tastings can be organised for those who want more information about our products and even to purchase them in our shop.
We can also host weddings, open-air activities for businesses and other groups, meetings, sales conventions, birthday parties, Christmas dinners and tourist events.
