The Sociedade Agrícola João Teodósio Matos Barbosa & Filhos, Lda. is a family business founded in 1997. The business has grown slowly, starting with the representation of other suppliers’ products.
The first vines were planted in 1999 at the Valle de Junco Estate in Esperança, Portalegre and the first wines went on the market in 2005. Later, a second vineyard was bought and planted in the foothills of Serra d´Aire e Candeeiros. At the same time, two wineries were built, one in Esperança and another in Rio Maior and have been operational since 2007.
Every time family and friends come together the business is meeting its goal: to produce great wine with a festive harvest that brings people of all generations together to freely share in this family-like experience.
The property is situated in a valley in the shelter of the Serra de São Mamede. This location offers unique characteristics due to its soil and its particular climate each season of the year.
The vineyards are planted on lands protected by the Serra de S. Mamede Natural Park with its prehistoric cave art depicting the beauty of the Alentejo region.
The vines are all planted on slopes, at altitudes ranging from 330 to 385 metres.
The winery was designed to produce wines with as minimal intervention as possible, avoiding, for example, the use of pumps.
The estate's facilities were designed to integrate naturally into the surroundings.
