THE ESTATE
Situated in the upper Alentejo, Portalegre district, km 206,5 on the IP2 between Veiros and Monforte, the 600 hectare estate lies in a a belt of gently ondulating granite countryside mostly given over to native forests of Mediterranean cork and holm oak and rasing of Alentejo purebreed cattle. The estate is bordered by two rivers, the Almuro and the Leca, which besides being a vital natural resource add to the beauty of the land. Registered as a private hunting reserve, the estate is a protected sanctuary for animal life. Besides the most common species of hare, partridge, duck and rabbit there are other rarer species such as bustard, deer, and wild boar.
The site of the farmhouse located near natural springs has vestiges of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. There are also indications of roman and visigoth occupation.
The farm has also been the center of religious agricultural community who built a small chapel at the farmhouse, the chapel of St. Sebastião.
THE VINEYARD
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Alicante Boushet and Aragonez, a magnificent selection of the best varieties from Iberia and France are planted in distinct blocks in accordance with variations in the slope and soils quality to allow for precise management of under-vine drip irrigation.
The coarseness of the soils, the scarcity of water and the range of temperature between day and night all reduce the yield per hectare; but nature gives in compensation and increase the quality of the fruit, with intense aromas and tastes so fundamental to the production of good wine.
THE WINERY
After hand picking and selection at a sorting table, the grapes are crushed and rapidly cooled before fermentation begins. The winery is equipped with a high specification stainless steel, temperature controlled lagares and conical fermentors to ensure the highest wine quality.
LIMA MAYER
With estate grown grapes from the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Syrah, Alicante Boushet and Aragonez the wine is produced, barrel aged in French oak and bottled at our winery and cellars. The wine has and aroma of intense, ripe red fruits, with a smooth, balanced and very elegant finish.
SUBSIDIO
Using only grapes from the Quinta de São Sebastião vineyards, principally the local Aragonez variety with a seasoning of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet. Showing refreshing fruit, good balance and smooth tannins, it is a wine for immediate drinking or cellaring for the next five to six years.
