THE PROJECT
It was during the year of 2010 that the urge to create a project in his own name began. A project that represented his identity and his will to do different wines in a region already filled with history and wine tradition.
In Estremoz, Miguel planted 5 hectares of young and promising vines in schist soils. Here, the Miguel Louro Wines represent the best of two worlds: the respect for the tradition and his origins and the will to do different things, with no make-up or masks, producing wines with freshness in a region best known for its continental and warm terroir.
All the wines are produced with minimalistic intervention processes, promoting the respect for the vineyards, its grape varieties and the sustainability of the process, guarantying the highest quality in all the wines.
“The main purpose is to produce wines with freshness, less alcohol and filled with character.”
MIGUEL
Miguel Louro has been around grapes and wine ever since he was a little boy, walking around his father’s project, Quinta do Mouro. Growing up in the middle of the vineyards and wine production cellars created a passion that quickly transformed into his own will to become a winemaker of his own.
Later, in Lisbon, he studied Agronomical Engineering. At the end of the degree, his thirst for knowledge lead him to the Douro region, where he did an internship in one of the most respected producers of the region. From there, he packed up to Italy and Germany for more international experience.
Nowadays, he is a winemaker in Mosel, Germany while also working on his own project in Estremoz, Alentejo.
THE WINES
Easy, mineral and easy drinking wines but, overall, food friendly and authentic. The usage of white grapes foreign to the Alentejo region shows how Miguel works to bring a more natural freshness to the region wines, believing in the full potential of the Portuguese grape varieties.
SONHAR means to dream. Unattainable but mainly in what we can transform into a reality. Accessible, uncomplicated, tasty. Ready to bring people close together and make them dream.
APELIDO means surname. A surname evokes origin and is important to building identity, but one’s own personality is a chance to trail a whole new path.
PRIMEIRO NOME means first name. The first name is the one that defines us. No justification. We reach out to our close ones by their first name. No formalities. This isn’t another Louro - it’s Miguel who makes this wine.
ALCUNHA means nickname. The nickname is a special individual characterization of a person, place or thing given because of a very own unique characteristic. A grape, a place, a wine.
DE NOME ARINTO introducing a grape with high yields, late maturations and amazing ageing potential. Grape with citric expression, high acidity and severe character. A grape that provokes me. A grape that tests me. A grape that fascinates me.
