The estate of Quinta do Quetzal is located in the heart of the Alentejo, in the finest areas of Vila de Frades/Vidigueira. The vineyards lie on schist slopes near the Serra do Mendro and the site climate provides unique conditions for producing both white and red wines.
In 2000 the restructuring of the vineyards was begun by replacing the less appropriate grape varieties. A significant number of old vines were maintained, however. Currently, there are 35 hectares of vineyards, 10 of which planted with white grapes, primarily Antão Vaz, Roupeiro and Perrum, and the rest with red grapes, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Aragonez, Tinta Grossa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah.
The winery was inaugurated in 2006 and designed around the concepts ‘modernity’ and ‘gravity’ – everything starts at the top of the winery and ends in the cellar, relying on gravity to transport the wines rather than on pumps. The buildings facing east, particularly those next to the winery, enjoy a wide-open view of the surroundings including the vineyards of the opposite hill and the town of Vidigueira.
