Historical Notes

Roquevale, Sociedade Agrícola da Herdade da Madeira Lda was officially established in 1983 following several years of farming in the Redondo area since 1970. In the beginning the company pursued a wide range of activities, including sheep farming, cereal and grape growing. In the late 1980s, however, wine growing became the exclusive focus. The winery was inaugurated in 1989 at the Monte Branco estate.

Location

Roquevale is located in the foothills of the Serra d’Ossa, in the winegrowing region of Redondo, currently one of the sub-regions of the Alentejo Protected Designation of Origin. In addition to producing excellent white wines, this region is known for being one of the most prestigious red wine regions in the country.

The Vineyards

Major periods of expansion took place in the periods 1991-1992, 1996-1997 and 2002-2003. The company now owns two vineyards, one on granitic soils at Monte Branco, dedicated mostly to white wine grapes, and the Herdade da Madeira Nova de Cima, where red schist soils mainly produce reds. Together, the two vineyards comprise 185 hectares, 80 % planted in red wine grapes and the rest in white.

Roquevale now enjoys enviable infrastructure for grape and wine production, quality control, bottling, storage and ageing as well as for environmental preservation.
Architecture:

A large and beautiful cellar was inaugurated in 2003 where the better quality wines age first in French and American oak barrels and then in the bottle before they are released on the market.
