In the same family for over 200 years, the 780-hectares estate São Lourenço do Barrocal has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient oaks, olive groves and vineyards.
Located in the foothills of medieval town Monsaraz and near the Alqueva Lake, it resonates the simplicity and the daily rhythms of a productive farm; the estate and its wines take their name from the barrocais, the monumental granite outcrops that dot the local landscape.
The winery is an integral part of the monte and the estate´s regeneration, producing first-class single-estate wines. From its own 15 hectares of vineyards, come the hand-picked grapes which form the basis of limited bottlings, the remaining grapes carefully blended before being matured.
With 2 fermentation vats for grape-stomping, 14 concrete traditional tanks with a total capacity of 80.000 liters and a room lined with French oak barrels, it is a versatile space that can host events together with the tasting room and adjacent outdoor terrace.
Carefully blended from a number of Portuguese indigenous varieties, São Lourenço do Barrocal wines reflect the character of the 10-year-old vines from which they come from and its unique terroir, recognised more than a century ago by the estate´s founder, who helped foster the region´s reputation for winemaking, planting many thousands of vines.
At the heart of the renowned Alentejo winemaking region and influenced by the Alqueva lake, the vineyards in São Lourenço do Barrocal enjoy the region´s dry, hot summer days and cool nights. Crafted by awarded winemaker Susana Esteban, the reserve red wine is created from Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet while the rich mellow red wines and the elegant crisp whites use also foreign varieties.
