Since Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal was founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & filhos, it has had a rich and varied history, making a name for itself as one of the most innovative wine producers in Portugal.
The company began producing wines from grapes coming from the Palmela region. In the 1980s, Bacalhôa entered into a phase of expansion as it began to see the fruits of investments in modern grape growing and winemaking, ushering in new paradigms into the Portuguese quality wine panorama.
In 1998 Commander José Berardo became the primary shareholder and intensified this mission, namely investing in the planting of new vines, updating the winery and buying new properties, as well as through a partnership with Lafitte Rothschild at the Quinta do Carmo. Bacalhôa bought the Quinta do Carmo estate whilst the Lafitte Rothschild Group acquired a percentage of Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal.
In 2007 Bacalhôa became the largest shareholder of Aliança, one of the most prestigious producers of top quality sparkling wines, brandies and still wines in Portugal.
Bacalhôa has wineries in the most important wine regions of Portugal: Douro, Dão, Bairrada, Península de Setúbal (Azeitão), Lisboa and the Alentejo.
The company also enjoys invaluable architectural patrimony including the Palace and Quinta da Bacalhôa – an important Renaissance national monument – and the Quinta dos Loridos, where the largest Oriental Garden in Europe and a remarkable collection of tiles can be found.
The company’s several estates participate in the “Art, Wine, Passion” project which aims to surprise even those with the highest standards. From the vine to the wine, the entire winemaking process is surrounded by assorted settings that bring tradition together with modernity, in a wide range of art exhibits, ranging from painting to sculpture, without forgetting natural wonders such as the millenary olive trees which were transplanted here during the construction of the Alqueva dam and reservoir.
With a production capacity of 20 million litres, ageing facilities for 15,000 oak barrels and around 1,000 hectares under vine, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal continues to seek innovation, in the quest to craft wine that provides its consumers with unusual and unsurpassed taste experiences of the highest possible standards of quality and consistency.
