Torre do Frade is a family estate in the county of Monforte in the heart of the Upper Alentejo, southeast Portugal, close to the border with Spanish Estremadura. The landscape is primarily taken up with cork and holm oak forests.
The original owner of the property donated the land to the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustine where the friars set up a convent that flourished until 1834, when all the religious orders were expelled from Portugal. The property was then sold at auction and in 1839 it was bought by the family who still owns it today.
From that moment on, our goal has been to produce a range of premium food products. The estate is currently managed conjointly by three branches of the original family.
We produce a wide range of agricultural products, particularly grains and livestock. We produce DPO Carnalentejana beef, grains certified for human consumption, honey, cork, Iberian pork and high quality grapes. In 2004, we began producing our first wines.
The ageing cellar is our ex-libris. After bottling, the wine is bottle aged in a 17th century tunnel dug into the rock, an unusual method in the Alentejo. This tunnel is about 100 metres in length and maintains year round temperatures between 14ºC – 18ºC and a relative humidity of 60% - 90%, with no need of mechanical air conditioning.
The ageing cellar was built in 17th century Tuscan style by French Counts. The rest of the estate is in the typical Alentejo style.
Wine tasting courses, guided tours of the entire estate, beginning in the vineyards and the winery and finishing in the granaries and livestock facilities.
