Harvest Year

An extremely dry year, 2009 had mild temperatures until July which increased from August on, causing a sudden advance in ripening to bring forward the start of the vintage by about 15 days.

Winemaker: Luís Cabral de Almeida

Varieties: 40% Aragonez, 30% Syrah and 30% Alicante Bouschet

Winemaking: On arrival at the winery, the grapes underwent full de-stemming and were softly crushed, followed by fermentation and maceration with pumping-over in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC for about 12 days. When the required organoleptic balance was achieved, the free run wine was set aside and the must was softly pressed to obtain a wine of great quality. The resulting wine is very elegant and is dominated by primary fruit notes and by a great expression of the of the Portuguese grape varieties.

Maturation: Following malolactic fermentation the wine matured for about a year in used French and Caucasian oak barrels. The delicate aromas from the grapes were enriched by the aromatic contribution of top-quality oak, to deliver a complex wine. The final blend was prepared from a lengthy qualitative selection achieved through numerous organoleptic tasting sessions and analyses to make it possible to choose the best wines by barrel and by grape variety. So as to preserve the utmost quality, this wine was bottled without cold stabilisation which may cause it to throw a deposit during ageing.

Store: The bottle should be kept horizontally in a dry and cool place, sheltered from light.

Serve: After decanting it should be served at a temperature between 17ºC-20ºC. This wine should be drunk immediately after opening.

Enjoy: The elegance and balance of Herdade do Peso Colheita Red 2009 make it ideal with meat and soft cheeses. It may, however, also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif at the start of a meal.
