Tasting Notes

Colour: Herdade do Peso Reserva has an intense garnet-red hue.
Aroma: Its bouquet is intense and complex with a prevalence of very ripe red and black fruits (mulberry, raspberry and plum), integrated with spicy and balmy notes, such as pepper, mint and coconut.
Palate: Its palate shows excellent balance between alcohol and acidity, giving it very elegant and complex flavours, long and persistent, supported by soft and dense tannins, a feature
resulting from its maturation in the bottle.

Harvest Year

This harvest, was extremely dry, with mild temperatures until June. In August, temperatures reached above-average, making it necessary to carry out judicious irrigation management in order to maintain the vine’s balance. Each vintage date was adjusted by variety and style of wine.

Winemaker: Luis Cabral de Almeida

Varieties: 70% Alicante Bouschet, 15% Touriga Nacional e 15% Syrah

Winemaking: After full de-stemming and soft crushing, fermentation and maceration followed with pumping-over in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC, for about 6 days. This was followed by an extended 10 day-long post-fermentation maceration, in order to increase aromatic and polyphenolic extraction.

Maturation: The wines were transferred separately to new and one-year old French (70%) and Caucasian (30%) oak barrels where they matured for about 12 months. The final blend was prepared after numerous tastings that made it possible to choose the best wines from the best barrels. Bottling was followed by a period of maturation in bottle at a controlled temperature of 15ºC for about 12 months, to achieve optimum balance.

Store: As this wine was bottled without ultra-cooling, a slight deposit may develop during in-bottle maturation, and so bottles should be kept horizontally in a dry and cool place, sheltered from light. Herdade do Peso Reserva 2009 will reach its peak, 4 to 6 years after the vintage, but it will go on developing for several years.

Serve: It should also be decanted prior to serving. Serve between 16ºC-18ºC.

Enjoy: Herdade do Peso Reserva 2012 is ideal with rich and spicy meat dishes, game and strong cheeses.
