Marquês de Borba Vinhas Velhas Red 2021

As the name suggests, Vinhas Velhas (Old Vines), is a wine that comes from our oldest vineyards.

The red wine comes from vineyards with more than 35 years and the white wine from vineyards with more than 25 years.

One of the most emblematic brands of João Portugal Ramos, Marquês de Borba combines the tradition of the Alentejo region with an excellent quality, present since the first vintage in 1997. The brand’s name comes from the happy coincidence of João Portugal Ramos’ vineyards and winery being located in Borba sub-region, and also of one of his uncles having the noble title Marquês de Borba, a title created in 1811.

Viticultural Year

2021 was a very favorable year for vegetative development. High rainfall during the vegetative rest allowed the soil's water reserves to be completely reestablished, which benefited the budding and initial development of the plants.

The mild temperatures during this period also contributed to the beginning of a balanced cycle. In spring, higher temperatures led to earlier flowering. The summer, with mild temperatures and without heat spells, allowed the grapes to complete their maturation.

The 2021 wines are complete wines both in terms of concentration as well as in terms of balance and freshness.

Harvest

The grapes are handpicked to small cases of 15 kg to preserve the fruits quality.

Vinification

The bunches are de-stemmed and pass by a sorting table for an optimum selection of the berries. The grapes are then crushed before going to the marble lagares, where they are foot trodden during 4 to 5 days, passing to stainless steel tanks to finish the alcoholic fermentation.

Ageing

12 months in American and French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Intense garnet color. Great concentration of black fruit, eucalyptus leaves and some notes of spices from aging in the barrels. Full bodied, with velvet tannins.
