As the name suggests, Vinhas Velhas (Old Vines), is a wine that comes from our oldest vineyards.
The red wine comes from vineyards with more than 35 years and the white wine from vineyards with more than 25 years.
One of the most emblematic brands of João Portugal Ramos, Marquês de Borba combines the tradition of the Alentejo region with an excellent quality, present since the first vintage in 1997. The brand’s name comes from the happy coincidence of João Portugal Ramos’ vineyards and winery being located in Borba sub-region, and also of one of his uncles having the noble title Marquês de Borba, a title created in 1811.

Viticultural Year
2022/2023 was characterized by being an atypical year, with a hot and rainy winter, a very hot and dry spring and an equally hot summer.
Throughout the growing season, high temperatures and low precipitation in some months contributed to a hot year, but with deviations in the climate pattern.
The plants vegetative cycle was early resulting in homogeneous and balanced maturations. The wines from this harvest are fresh, aromatic, well-structured and nicely balanced.
Harvest
The grapes are handpicked to small cases of 15 kg to preserve the fruits freshness.
Vinification
The grapes are cooled down in a cold chamber prior to vinification. Fermentation starts in stainless steel tanks with temperature control, after one third of the alcoholic fermentation the must is racked to new and old barrels where it finishes fermentation process.
Ageing
8 months in Hungarian and French 500 litres oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
Well defined color with slightly green tones. Citric aromas, exotic fruits and elegant spicy notes. Complex flavor showing a body perfectly combined with a mineral freshness of great elegance.
